Hi, I'm Phillip.

I'm a British-South African writer, working in AI learning for PAIR. I have this website because I used to be a journalist and editor in international affairs, business, technology, and the environment.

I consider myself to be in recovery.

At PAIR I help humans get the most out of AI, by applying everything I have learnt about writing, and by using rather a lot of AI. 

I have started print and online publications, managed investigations, and fought fake news. I have been a radio and TV talking head. I have also perpetrated quite a lot of honest journalism about all kinds of things.

I used to write columns about global affairs and about technology.

I published the book Write Risky: How to write for impact in the age of AI as a call for risk-adjusted writing to fight bland conformity – with some cheap (in terms of time) and nasty (in terms of impact) tricks to do it easily.
